DOÑA ANA COUNTY, N.M. – Following President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 Elections, NM CAFe is moving to protect communities targeted throughout the campaign season by Trump and his supporters. In statements following the election, NM CAFe expressed grief over the state of the country and recommitted to the fight for justice.
People of faith have opposed authoritarians since biblical times. Now is no different. Faith without action is ineffective; this is the belief at the crux of our mission to build a new America rooted in justice and equity in which all people are afforded dignity and self-determination. In the face of hate, we may be grieving the results of this election, but we will not give up.
Our commitment to justice and our communities extends far beyond the ballot box. Our democracy’s strength lies in its people; it is US, not just public officials, who form the foundation of our democratic systems. We must dig deep to organize in the face of hate, build in the places that have been intentionally destroyed, and put more people from our community in the seats at the tables we’ve been denied access to. We’re being called to act.
Over the coming days, weeks, and months, vulnerable communities will likely face significant challenges. We remain committed to providing resources, support, and training to prepare our communities to know their rights and stand firm against attempts to undermine their power. We will transform our grief into an organizing force that will build a society that truly respects the dignity of all people.
This moment calls us to take action to protect the communities who have been targeted throughout this campaign and during the prior Trump administration. We recognize the fear and uncertainty many are feeling and we want everyone to channel that energy into strategic organizing.
We cannot afford to be passive or complacent in the face of creeping authoritarianism. Together, we must be relentless in our efforts to combat the hateful forces that threaten our safety, our dignity, and our democratic institutions.
NM CAFe will remain grounded in our faith and unwavering in our commitment to fight for justice. Fear will not dictate our actions. We will continue our work to build a brighter, more equitable future. We are confident that our shared values of compassion, dignity, education and social justice will prevail.
