Families with children fleeing life-threatening situations in Central America, Mexico, and elsewhere have asked for safety and protection in the United States. They are being allowed to enter, after being vetted by U.S. authorities to seek asylum. Border officials have determined these families fear for their lives if they return to their home countries, and are being released with court dates in their destination cities. Families are released to the care of community shelters all across the border region. El Calvario Methodist Church in Las Cruces, NM is one of these shelters. Families arrive here every week; families get a home cooked meal, they can get a warm shower, get a new set of clothes, and travel arrangements are booked for them. When vulnerable refugees have asked for help, our community has responded with compassion. We are asking the community to respond again to assist these refugees to get to their destination cities. All donations are tax deductible and will be used to assist with travel costs.
El Calvario is partnering with NM CAFe and other local organizations to assist these families in their hour of need. Please email Anselmo Delgado Martinez (admkjn@gmail.com) to inquire about material donations, although currently monetary donations are a priority. Thank you.
